Underwriting & Claims Team Leader – Johannesburg

About the role

As the Underwriting & Claims Team Leader you will lead both the underwriting and claims teams in Johannesburg, ensuring efficient, compliant and high-quality outcomes for customers. You will manage day-to-day operations, monitor performance against service level and quality targets, and uphold regulatory and internal governance standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop the underwriting and claims teams, conducting regular performance and development discussions.
• Monitor productivity, quality and SLA targets, manage capacity planning and workload distribution.
• Oversee the quality and consistency of underwriting and claims decisions, reviewing complex, high-value and escalated cases.
• Provide technical guidance to team members and ensure compliance with insurer, reinsurer and company requirements.
• Identify continuous-improvement opportunities and support business objectives through effective risk management and stakeholder engagement.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) qualification; relevant insurance or business qualification preferred.
• Minimum 5 years experience in underwriting, claims or insurance operations.
• 2–3 years of leadership experience managing teams.
