Senior Materials Handling Design Engineer

About the role

NEPEAN Conveyors is looking for an experienced Senior Materials Handling Design Engineer to lead technical developments and design solutions across Africa. You will act as the Lead Engineer, taking full accountability for project quality from concept through commissioning while mentoring technical staff.

Key responsibilities

• Lead project activities to deliver high‑quality engineering scope on time and within budget, covering bulk material handling, conveyors, chutes, storage, machine design, retrofitting and structural designs.
• Manage the full project lifecycle – concept, design, execution, manufacturing and commissioning – for both greenfield and brownfield projects.
• Perform critical calculations for mechanical and structural design elements.
• Develop designs from concept to Issued for Construction (IFC) stage.
• Supervise and direct professional technical staff, reviewing work for technical accuracy.
• Provide expert assistance during installation, commissioning and handover.
• Collaborate with draughting resources using the latest engineering tools and with the in‑house manufacturing team to optimise designs for production.
• Assist with on‑site troubleshooting and manage external sub‑contractors for specialised services.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 10–15 years of experience in a similar design engineering role.
• Extensive experience in conveyor mechanical and structural design.
• Proven machine design experience.
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Deeply ingrained safety culture.
