Senior Mechanical Engineer – Underground Hard Rock Mining

About the role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design of underground hard‑rock mining systems for AECOM’s South Africa Enterprise Capabilities office. The role covers the full lifecycle from concept through detailed design and construction support, focusing on crushers, conveyors, ore passes and related infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design of underground crushing, conveying, ore handling and fixed‑plant systems.
• Develop detailed design drawings, 3D models and documentation using AutoCAD and Navisworks.
• Coordinate mechanical designs with civil, structural, electrical and process disciplines and conduct clash‑detection reviews.
• Prepare design calculations, equipment selection documents, specifications and data sheets.
• Provide technical mentorship and quality review for junior designers and support construction activities, site visits and HAZID/HAZOP reviews.

Required profile

• Minimum 12 years of mechanical design experience, including at least 5 years in hard‑rock underground mining (copper or gold).
• Strong knowledge of mining regulations, mechanical engineering codes and experience with ventilation‑on‑demand systems is advantageous.
• Registration with ECSA or equivalent professional body is a plus.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD for mechanical design.
• Experience with Navisworks for 3D model coordination and clash detection.
• Familiarity with Advance Steel is advantageous.
