Yard Shunter Driver

About the role

The Yard Shunter Driver is responsible for moving trailers safely within the yard, ensuring efficient flow between loading bays, workshops and storage areas. This role supports the logistics team by maintaining accurate records and adhering to safety standards during night shift operations.

Key responsibilities

• Move trailers between loading bays, parking areas, workshops, and storage locations.
• Position trailers accurately at loading and off‑loading docks.
• Conduct daily pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the shunter vehicle.
• Report vehicle defects, damages, and maintenance needs promptly.
• Communicate with warehouse staff, transport planners and loading personnel.
• Maintain accurate records of trailer movements and inspections.
• Securely park trailers and use wheel chocks where required.
• Perform coupling and uncoupling of trailers safely.
• Monitor trailer availability and assist with yard planning.
• Maintain housekeeping standards and adhere to site traffic rules.
• Assist with loading and off‑loading activities and support stock movement.
• Report incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately.

Required profile

• Grade 12 (Matric) preferred.
• Valid Code 10 or Code 14 Driver's Licence.
• Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
• Minimum 5 years' experience as a Yard Shunter Driver or Heavy Vehicle Driver.
• Experience in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, mining or distribution environments.
• Good understanding of trailer coupling and uncoupling procedures.
• Knowledge of transport and road safety legislation.
• Ability to work night shift (18:00‑06:00), weekends and overtime.
