Underwriter – Trade Credit & Reinsurance

About the role

The role focuses on underwriting short‑term insurance applications within the trade credit and reinsurance space. The incumbent will act on behalf of the Senior Underwriter, receive coaching and mentorship, and may also mentor junior staff as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse and interpret financial statements and financial models to assess credit risk.
• Conduct desktop and field due diligence, reviewing contracts and financial documents.
• Engage with deal teams to coordinate transaction visits, negotiate structures, and assess commercial terms.
• Prepare high‑quality transaction submissions for approval committees such as Project EXCO and the Board.
• Develop and maintain relationships with exporters, lenders, insurers, reinsurers and export credit agencies.
• Support the strategic plan of the Short‑Term Insurance (STI) underwriting unit and manage portfolio risk.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Credit Risk Management, Business Administration or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in short‑term trade insurance, reinsurance, or commercial/political risk underwriting.
• Basic knowledge of international business practices, contractual and corporate finance.
• FAIS qualification (Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services) is an added advantage.
