Short-Term Insurance Underwriter & Client Service Specialist

About the role

Absa is expanding its insurance division in Johannesburg and is recruiting an Underwriting Consultant for short-term commercial lines insurance. The role balances technical risk assessment with high-level client service, managing the full lifecycle of policies from initial applications through renewals and mid-term adjustments, while keeping the insurer's risk appetite in line with operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate new business submissions, policy renewals and amendments to existing contracts
• Apply technical underwriting principles to assess the acceptability of risks
• Review supporting documentation and policy data to make informed, defensible decisions
• Explain technical insurance concepts clearly to brokers, internal stakeholders and clients
• Meet service level agreements to deliver a professional, responsive customer experience
• Analyse current workflows to identify process improvements
• Stay compliant with FAIS legislation and internal audit requirements

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Insurance, Finance, Risk Management or Business
• 2 to 5 years of underwriting experience in the local short-term insurance sector
• FAIS compliance; an RE5 qualification is a significant advantage
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills, able to manage professional relationships under pressure
