Senior Engineer – Materials Handling Projects & Structures

About the role

The Senior Engineer will lead the design and delivery of structural systems for materials‑handling projects in the mining and industrial sectors. Based in AECOM’s Enterprise Capabilities office in Centurion, the role works with local and global teams and follows a flexible hybrid work model.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and review structural design drawings, calculations and documentation for conveyors, transfer towers, crushing stations and related structures.
• Develop detailed 3‑D structural models using AutoCAD, Advanced Steel, Revit (concrete) and Navisworks.
• Lead design from concept through detailed design and provide construction support.
• Coordinate structural designs with civil, mechanical and process engineering disciplines.
• Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards and project specifications.
• Mentor junior and intermediate designers and manage deliverable registers and revision control.

Required profile

• Degree in Structural Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum 10 years of structural design experience focused on materials handling and heavy‑industrial projects.
• Experience in underground or surface mining environments, preferably with mining structural or materials‑handling projects.
• Ability to work independently and manage outputs with minimal supervision.
• Strong understanding of structural codes and standards applicable to mining and industrial projects.
• Professional registration with ECSA or equivalent is advantageous.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD for detailed structural drawings.
• Full structural detailing capability in Advanced Steel.
• Revit expertise, including concrete design applications.
• Model integration, clash detection and review using Navisworks.
• 3‑D solid modelling with Inventor (advantageous).
• Piping and plant layout coordination using Plant 3D (advantageous).
