Senior Engineer - Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

About the role

AECOM is seeking a Senior Engineer – Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to join its Enterprise Capabilities office in Centurion, South Africa. The position supports both local and global teams delivering ITS solutions for major road, tunnel, motorway, rail and smart infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design, specify and integrate ITS systems such as CCTV, VMS, fibre‑optic networks and incident detection across transportation projects.
• Prepare and review engineering documentation including specifications, design criteria, drawings, calculations and scope documents.
• Coordinate interfaces between ITS, electrical, communications, civil and structural disciplines.
• Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, systems integration workshops and multidisciplinary coordination sessions.
• Support testing, commissioning and operational readiness activities, and assist in project estimates and resource planning.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement and digital engineering initiatives.

Required profile

• At least 8 years of experience delivering ITS or transport technology projects and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications, Mechatronics or related discipline.
• Registered Professional Engineer with a recognised professional body.
• Proven experience on major road, motorway, tunnel, rail or smart infrastructure projects.
• Strong ability to work independently on complex technical tasks and manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent communication skills for collaboration across countries, cultures and disciplines.
• Experience with international standards (e.g., Australian Standards, road authority standards, ITS frameworks).

• CCTV, Variable Message Signs, lane‑use and variable‑speed limit signage.
• Fibre‑optic and communications network design.
• Traffic management and incident detection systems.
• Engineering documentation preparation (specifications, technical reports, verification plans).
• Use of digital delivery tools such as Aconex, GIS, Revizto and MS Project.
• Knowledge of Australian, road authority or equivalent ITS standards.
