Infection Control Officer

About the role

The Infection Control Officer will plan, develop and implement an infection control programme for Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre, ensuring compliance with national and international standards.

Key responsibilities

• Assist hospital staff in preventing, identifying and controlling infectious issues for patients and employees.
• Develop and maintain an up‑to‑date infection control programme aligned with current standards.
• Notify the Department of Health of reportable diseases in a timely manner.
• Organise regular infection control committee meetings and document proceedings.
• Maintain accessible infection control files for nursing and housekeeping staff.
• Conduct audits and address critical non‑conformances.

Required profile

• Relevant nursing qualification in infection control (1‑year diploma) or a 6‑month infection control certificate.
• 3‑5 years of hospital experience in an infection control role.
• Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council and compliance with SANC code and health legislation.
• Compulsory BLS certification.
• Advanced computer literacy.
• Flexible working hours.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
