Imports Controller – Ocean Freight

About the role

The Imports Controller will manage Ocean Freight Import shipments from start to finish, ensuring compliance with company policies and delivering effective service to clients. This role involves coordinating rates, documentation, and communication with carriers, agents, and customers.

Key responsibilities

• Open shipment files, allocate numbers, and establish landside, transport, and third‑party rates.
• Verify that shipping line invoices match internal buying rates.
• Collect and provide all shipment documentation to the clearing department and notify consignees.
• Gather cargo information, buying/selling rates, and arrange shipping methods with clients and international offices.
• Monitor cargo arrival against bookings and ensure timely handover of documents.
• Communicate shipment status to clients and support Controllers with event controls and data capture in Cargowise.
• Track shipments through indent, POD, and invoice payment to close out files efficiently.
• Obtain clearing instructions, verify MBL/HBL against invoices and packing lists, and ensure compliance with customs requirements.
• Maintain strong relationships with carriers, agents, and clients to enhance brand reputation.
• Capture accruals for demurrage, detention, and revenue recognition accurately.

Required profile

• Matric (NCFF NQF 3/4); FIATA diploma advantageous.
• Logistics or related degree/diploma advantageous.
• 3‑5 years’ experience in Ocean Import services.
• Comprehensive knowledge of forwarding, clearing, Incoterms, and customs requirements.
• Strong communication, decision‑making, and deadline‑orientation.
