General Assistant – Mining Blasting Support

About the role

The General Assistant supports the truck operator by moving products from silos to the blasting face and ensures the vehicle, refilling area and surrounding work zones are kept clean and maintained. All activities must follow statutory, legal, client and BME standards without shortcuts.

Key responsibilities

• Perform risk assessments and safe‑work declarations with the blaster before entering the site.
• Assist the MMU in charging blasting holes and loading products.
• Help the blaster prepare the charge‑up area, erect client‑specified barricades and map hole locations.
• Measure and verify hole depth, ensuring compliance with prescribed parameters.
• Place detonators and boosters at the hole collar and prime the holes under supervision.
• Identify and correct any deviations from blasting prescriptions by coordinating with mine staff, drill contractors or the foreman.
• Carry out any additional ad‑hoc duties within the required timeframe.

Required profile

• Matric / Grade 12 with Mathematics.
• At least 1 year of experience in a blasting or mining environment, including 1 year as a blasting assistant.
• Preferable certifications: Code B or EC licence, Competent A, Blasting Assistant certificate (MQA).
