Communications Officer

About the role

The Communications Officer will support Kouga Local Municipality by managing its public image, creating engaging content, and ensuring consistent messaging across all media channels. This three‑year contractual position requires strong public relations abilities and fluency in at least two official languages.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and grow official social media platforms, creating content that increases audience reach and engagement.
• Develop, coordinate and implement communication strategies, plans and procedures aligned with the municipality’s brand.
• Draft media releases, statements, speeches and presentations for internal and external audiences.
• Maintain media relations, monitor coverage, maintain a media database and arrange interview opportunities.
• Prepare executive reports and quarterly publications highlighting council activities and community outreach.
• Respond to media enquiries, monitor press coverage and handle queries from external news outlets.

Required profile

• Relevant NQF Level 6 diploma.
• Code 8 driving licence.
• Minimum four years of relevant communications or public relations experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work under pressure and strong attention to detail.
• Proficiency in at least two of the official languages (Afrikaans, English, Xhosa).
