Chief Medical Officer (CMO) – Medical Underwriting Consultant

About the role

We are looking for a qualified Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or Medical Practitioner to provide specialist medical underwriting support for a leading financial services organisation. This flexible contract role allows you to maintain private practice or other professional commitments while delivering expert medical risk assessments.

Key responsibilities

• Review and evaluate medical reports, laboratory results, and supporting documentation for life insurance applications.
• Assess medical risks and deliver expert opinions to guide underwriting decisions.
• Advise underwriting teams on medical conditions, prognosis, and associated insurance risks.
• Escalate and manage complex or high‑risk medical cases as needed.
• Provide recommendations to support sound underwriting and risk mitigation.
• Ensure all assessments comply with regulatory requirements, clinical standards, and company policies.
• Collaborate closely with underwriting and risk teams to facilitate informed decision‑making.
• Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive medical information.

Required profile

• MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
• Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• Minimum 5 years post‑community service clinical experience.
• Experience in life insurance underwriting, insurance medicine, occupational health, or medical risk assessment is highly advantageous.
• Excellent analytical, clinical, and decision‑making abilities.
• Strong written communication and medical report‑writing skills.
