Building Control Officer (Piketberg)

About the role

Bergrivier Municipality, with its head office in Piketberg, is re-advertising a Building Control Officer position in its Technical Services Directorate. The post performs and coordinates building control and inspection tasks so that the National Building Standards and Regulations Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the National Heritage Resources Act and other legislation are complied with. Internal and external applications are considered.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate building control activities and monitor compliance with standards and specifications for new buildings, additions and renovations
• Check that design details and construction specifications on building plans conform with regulations before approval
• Carry out preliminary, foundation, sewerage and water layout, fire installation and completion inspections
• Ensure legislative compliance, including the National Heritage Resources Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Monitor compliance with approved budgets and prepare monthly and ad hoc reports
• Maintain records of work in progress and completed works, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders

Required profile

• Standard equivalent to a senior certificate plus a 3-year tertiary degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Building Management, Building Science, Building Surveying or Quantity Surveying
• Five to eight years of building industry experience
• Knowledge of town planning and fire safety regulations, structural engineering concepts, the OHSA and the National Building Regulations
• Eligibility to register as a Peace Officer (Law Enforcement Officer)
• Proficiency in at least two official languages of the Western Cape (Afrikaans, English or Xhosa, read, write and speak)
• Physically fit, able to work in all weather conditions and outside normal hours during emergencies

Required skills

• Computer literacy (MS Office)
• Code B driver's licence
• Supervisory and conflict-handling skills

What we offer

• Salary of R 484 404 per annum (T13 of a Category 3 Local Authority) plus the Essential Motor Scheme
