Senior Training Officer – Open Cast Coal Mine

About the role

The Senior Training Officer will lead and continuously improve all technical training and competency development programmes for employees at an open‑cast coal mine. Reporting to senior management, you will ensure that training meets MQA, MHSA and company standards while supporting safe and productive operations.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the mine’s training department, develop annual training plans and supervise Training Officers and Instructors.
• Coordinate theoretical and practical training for equipment such as rigid dump trucks, ADTs, excavators, dozers, graders, front‑end loaders, drill rigs, water bowsers and other support machinery.
• Conduct formative, summative and RPL assessments, moderate assessments and maintain MQA compliance.
• Prepare for MQA and Department of Mineral Resources audits, keep training records and competency matrices up to date.
• Develop and update learning material, assessments and practical evaluations, and review SOPs and work instructions.
• Promote a strong safety culture through inductions, refresher training and participation in incident investigations.
• Compile weekly and monthly training reports, monitor statutory compliance, budgets and training databases.

Required profile

• Grade 12 with a National Certificate in Surface Excavation, Rockbreaking or an equivalent mining qualification.
• MQA Registered Assessor and Moderator, Competent Person A qualification; blasting assistant qualification is advantageous.
• Train‑the‑Trainer qualification and a valid driver’s licence.
• Minimum 10 years of mining training experience, strong leadership and coaching ability.
