Safety Officer – Bloemfontein (Construction)

About the role

We are looking for a highly qualified Safety Officer to join our team for immediate deployment on key utility infrastructure and power system projects in and around Bloemfontein. The role focuses on implementing, monitoring and enforcing occupational health and safety practices to meet strict statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Enforce compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations and internal SHEQ guidelines.
• Validate safety systems, method statements and exercise stop‑work authority when hazards are identified.
• Conduct regular Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) for substation expansions, distribution networks and civil works.
• Perform site safety inspections, verify PPE, fall‑arrest systems and earthing setups.
• Audit and manage principal contractor and subcontractor safety files to ensure client‑level compliance before site access.
• Prepare flash reports, root‑cause analyses and close‑out documentation for incidents and near‑misses.
• Lead toolbox talks, induction training and behavioural safety programmes to promote a zero‑harm culture.
• Compile monthly safety statistics and validation books for submission to Eskom project managers and auditors.

Required profile

• Active, verifiable registration with the SACPCMP as a Professional Construction Health and Safety Officer (PrCHSO) – non‑negotiable.
• Recognised Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management, Environmental Health or a related discipline.
• Proven experience in construction or utility projects with a strong focus on health and safety compliance.
