Independent Mechanical Engineer Consultant (Mining & Heavy Equipment)

About the role

ZAENG Consulting & Construction Engineers is looking for an experienced Independent Mechanical Engineer Consultant to support a short‑term feasibility study in the mining sector. The role is project‑based, ideal for a senior engineer with deep knowledge of heavy industrial equipment, materials handling, hydraulics and mining infrastructure. Most work can be performed remotely with occasional site visits in South Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Assess existing mechanical systems and installations through site inspections and condition assessments.
• Identify engineering constraints, improvement opportunities and develop alternative solutions.
• Conduct mechanical design reviews, concept development and equipment operability assessments.
• Evaluate reliability, lifecycle and maintenance considerations.
• Participate in risk assessments, HAZID and HAZOP workshops.
• Prepare technical reports, recommendations and contribute to feasibility studies and preliminary engineering deliverables.

Required profile

• BEng/BSc/BTech in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in mining, minerals processing, or heavy industrial equipment.
• Proven ability to work independently within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong technical report writing skills.
• Experience with feasibility studies, engineering assessments and concept development.
