High Voltage Safety Officer – Richards Bay

About the role

The role is to provide professional safety oversight for high‑voltage utility and power system projects around Richards Bay. The officer will implement, monitor and enforce occupational health and safety practices to meet strict statutory and Eskom requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Enforce compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, construction regulations and Eskom SHEQ guidelines.
• Validate safety systems, method statements and exercise stop‑work authority when hazards are identified.
• Conduct regular Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) for substation expansions, distribution networks and civil works.
• Perform site safety surveillance, ensuring PPE, fall‑arrest lines and earthing setups meet specifications.
• Audit and manage principal contractor and subcontractor safety files before site access.
• Prepare flash reports, root‑cause analyses and close‑out documentation for incidents and near‑misses.
• Lead toolbox talks, inductions and behavioural safety programmes to promote a zero‑harm culture.
• Compile monthly safety statistics and validation books for Eskom project managers and auditors.

Required profile

• Active registration with SACPCMP as a Professional Construction Health and Safety Officer (PrCHSO) – non‑negotiable.
• Relevant qualifications in occupational health and safety or a related field.
• Proven experience on high‑risk utility or power infrastructure projects.
• Strong knowledge of South African OHS legislation and Eskom safety standards.
