Engineering Specialist (Structural Engineer)

About the role

The Engineering Specialist (Structural Engineer) will provide strategic design and independent quality assurance for projects undertaken by the Development Bank of South Africa. The role combines planning, design, and supervision to minimise risk and ensure regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic structural design advice from project inception.
• Oversee quality and accuracy of prototype and design drawings supplied by clients and service providers.
• Research best‑practice delivery methods and advise on technical implementation plans and contractual documentation.
• Conduct continuous quality assurance and cost‑value optimisation during project execution.
• Stay current with local statutory regulations and integrate them into project programmes.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives in cost, design, and estimating services.
• Collaborate with external engineering firms and professional bodies for benchmarking and cost‑saving opportunities.
• Assist internal audits and compile special reports as required.
• Prepare specifications, proposals and tender documentation, and liaise with construction contractors to ensure structural safety.

Required profile

• Engineering degree (BEng/BSc Eng) or equivalent qualification.
• Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer.
• Demonstrated experience in structural design, cost estimation and project scheduling.
• Ability to apply engineering principles to develop innovative solutions for complex problems.
