Dayshift Fitter Assistant – Mechanical Support

About the role

The Dayshift Fitter Assistant provides practical support to qualified fitters and mechanical supervisors in a zinc mining operation. Working on the day shift, you will help ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of mechanical equipment through maintenance, repairs, installations, and housekeeping tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Follow mine health and safety legislation, lock‑out/tag‑out, permit‑to‑work, and working‑at‑heights procedures.
• Assist fitters with planned and preventive maintenance, breakdown repairs, and component installations.
• Handle tools, spares, and materials; transport and position mechanical components.
• Maintain clean and safe work areas, assist with equipment cleaning and oil‑spill prevention.
• Support urgent day‑shift breakdowns and planned shutdown campaigns.
• Complete basic job cards, checklists, and maintenance records; report defects to supervisors.

Required profile

• Grade 10–12 or equivalent education.
• Basic understanding of workplace safety and ability to follow instructions.
• Medically fit for mine work.
• Preferably 2 years experience in an industrial, mining, or mechanical environment.
• Entry‑level candidates with mechanical assistant or pre‑apprenticeship training are welcome.

Required skills

• Basic mechanical tool handling.
• Basic hand‑tool experience.
• Knowledge of lock‑out/tag‑out and permit‑to‑work procedures.
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
