Dayshift Electrical Assistant

About the role

The Dayshift Electrical Assistant provides hands‑on support to qualified electricians and supervisors on a zinc mining operation. Working during normal operating hours, the role focuses on routine maintenance, installations, inspections and housekeeping to keep electrical systems safe and reliable.

Key responsibilities

• Follow Mine Health and Safety legislation, site rules and electrical procedures, including lock‑out/tag‑out and permit‑to‑work requirements.
• Assist electricians with planned and preventive maintenance, minor repairs, installations and removals of motors, motor control equipment, lighting and small power systems.
• Perform cable pulling, routing, tagging and preparation for terminations.
• Maintain clean and orderly electrical rooms, MCC rooms and work areas; clean motors, panels and equipment.
• Support dayshift maintenance activities, respond to electrical faults, and assist during shutdowns or project work.
• Complete basic job cards, checklists and inspection reports; report faults and handle spares.
• Participate in safety toolbox talks, risk assessments and training sessions to develop competency.

Required profile

• Grade 10–12 (or equivalent) with a basic understanding of workplace safety.
• Ability to follow instructions, work procedures and wear prescribed PPE.
• Medically fit for mine work.
• Preferably completed electrical assistant or pre‑apprenticeship training and basic experience with hand tools.
• Exposure to mining or industrial plant environments is advantageous.

Required skills

• Basic electrical tool handling.
• Identification of common electrical components.
• Understanding of housekeeping and contamination control.
• Awareness of electrical safety principles, including lock‑out/tag‑out.
• Experience with motor control equipment and cable pulling/termination.
