Data Scientist

About the role

This Data Scientist position sits at the intersection of advanced analytics and business strategy within the Standard Bank Group, helping turn complex datasets into trends, risk mitigations and growth opportunities across Africa. It suits someone comfortable with both structured and unstructured data, able to bridge technical data architecture and high-level business strategy, and to explain findings to non-technical stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Apply data mining techniques to extract patterns from large-scale data repositories.
• Develop and deploy predictive models, including credit scoring, propensity analysis and churn prediction.
• Design and implement algorithms to process complex, unstructured data streams, including imagery and real-time data.
• Work with cross-functional teams to refine data architecture, ETL processes and database integrity.
• Use visualisation tools such as Power BI or Tableau to build clear, narrative-driven dashboards.
• Manage project timelines so technical outputs meet the demands of the financial services sector.
• Interpret data to challenge existing business assumptions and explore new possibilities for data monetisation.

Required profile

• Relevant first degree in Information Technology or a related field.
• 3 to 4 years of experience in the data analytics space.
• Familiarity with the nuances of financial data.
• Experience building statistical models and a deep understanding of data mining methodologies.
• Strong communication, teamwork and deadline management skills.

Required skills

• Data science software such as R, SAS or SPSS.
• Software engineering principles.
• Managing data flows, ETL pipelines and technical business intelligence tasks.
