Yard Controller – Heavy Transport

About the role

The Yard Controller at Hestony in Johannesburg ensures that vehicles entering and leaving the yard meet company standards, both mechanically and cosmetically, and leave the yard defect free. The role covers vehicle inspections, yard flow, asset management and risk management.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect all company vehicles entering the yard for damage, mechanical defects, branding integrity and tyre condition
• Check vehicles leaving the yard so that repairs are completed or scheduled according to customer requirements
• Ensure vehicles follow the correct yard/work flows, are directed to the wash bay when needed and use the parking area efficiently
• Provide post-inspection defect lists to the workshop and communicate with them so repairs are attended to quickly
• Report vehicle abuse or driver damage through the correct channels and assist the workshop with driver-to-pay and damage estimates
• Make sure scheduled repairs are concluded and maintain fleet checklists for regular inspections
• Carry out regular yard inspections for good housekeeping and ensure staff wear protective equipment as required

Required profile

• 1 to 3 years of experience in a similar role within a heavy transport workshop environment
• Matric/Grade 12
• Driver's licence, minimum code 08/B
• Willingness to work long hours and weekends when operational needs require it
• Positive attitude, teamwork, punctuality, integrity and respect; non-confrontational communication and adherence to the code of conduct

Required skills

• Computer literacy including MS Word, MS Excel, internet and email
• Strong technical and mechanical knowledge
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail
