Water Quality Officer - North/East Areas

About the role

The City of Ekurhuleni is looking for a Water Quality Officer for the North/East areas. The officer carries out monitoring of potable water, industrial effluent discharge and income, waste and environmental water quality and pollution, ensuring compliance with policies, by-laws, procedures and relevant legislation. The officer works closely with the laboratory on sampling and analysis results.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect industries, businesses and environmental points, and take samples at industrial effluent and potable water sample points.
• Evaluate storm water pollution and help resolve it; assess water quality to ensure legislative compliance.
• Evaluate analysis results, spot deviations and advise on corrective actions.
• Identify and investigate new industrial effluent contributors and update the industrial effluent list.
• Perform laboratory duties, including preparing and standardizing solutions and calibrating instruments.
• Issue and evaluate industrial effluent discharge permit applications and record meter readings.
• Liaise with effluent contributors, the public and other departments on water quality matters.
• Handle consumer complaints in line with Batho Pele principles and supervise and assess general workers' performance.
• Control consumable and chemical stock, manage assets and perform administrative duties for the water quality office.
• Calculate industrial effluent charges and ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Required profile

• National Diploma in Natural Science (Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Water Care or Water Quality) or an NQF7 water-related qualification.
• 1 year of experience in a similar environment.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Computer literacy.
