Underwriting Team Lead – Cyber & Commercial PI

About the role

AIG South Africa is looking for an Underwriting Team Lead for its cyber and commercial property insurance business in Johannesburg. The role manages the portfolio of business for profitable and sustainable growth, issues and controls underwriting authority within limits, and provides technical guidance and training to underwriters. The position is primarily in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Underwrite business within underwriting authority through a rigorous risk assessment covering loss control, claims history and other risk management factors.
• Play an active role in developing, negotiating and signing off large programs, motivating limits and policy structures where referral is required.
• Provide technical underwriting guidance and ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines and referrals.
• Manage the portfolio, assess its performance and recommend adjustments to the Profit Centre Manager, and provide accurate estimates and reports.
• Conduct technical underwriting audits and keep abreast of market changes and trends.
• Build relationships with clients and brokers, represent AIG on industry bodies and professional associations, and adhere to internal SLAs.
• Reduce the expense ratio by streamlining processes and improving efficiency.
• Ensure adherence to audit, regulatory and compliance requirements.

Required profile

• Graduate-level degree in business, economics, insurance or marketing.
• Insurance qualification.
• FAIS compliant.
• 5-7 years of short-term insurance underwriting experience.
