Superintendent Rock Engineering

About the role

The Superintendent Rock Engineering will lead the rock engineering function for an underground mining operation in South Africa. Reporting to senior management, you will ensure safe and efficient strata control, compliance with legislation, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee rock strata identification, monitoring and control in underground workings.
• Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals Act and related regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation measures for hazards such as falls of ground, harmful gases and fire.
• Manage ventilation strategies to maintain a safe working environment.
• Lead the implementation and maintenance of the Quality Management System.
• Coordinate with finance and planning teams on budgeting, cost control and mine planning activities.
• Provide technical guidance and supervision to strata control officers and engineering staff.

Required profile

• Chamber of Mines Rock Engineering Certificate (COMREC).
• Minimum 5 years experience in rock engineering, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Legal appointee status under the Minerals Act and Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Medically fit, clear security screening record and valid driver’s licence (if applicable).
• Advanced Rock Engineering Certificate, Mining Engineering/Physics/Geology degree or diploma is advantageous.
