Software Engineer (Java / Kotlin)

About the role

A fast-growing online business based in South Africa, which values a high-performance yet collaborative culture, is looking for a Software Engineer (Java / Kotlin) to contribute to its Kotlin Android application. The position is based in Cape Town on a hybrid basis.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to the development of the Kotlin Android application.
• Design, develop and test code written in Kotlin and Java.
• Draft technical specifications and briefs, and perform code reviews.
• Monitor and profile application performance.
• Monitor services and systems within the infrastructure.
• Collaborate with creative, content and engineering teams to design and develop the app and publish it to the Play Store.

Required profile

• 5+ years in software development, including 4+ years of Kotlin experience.
• Experience architecting, developing, testing and maintaining Android mobile applications.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and a strong drive for results.
• Excellent communication skills, teamwork and relationship-building skills.

Required skills

• Kotlin and Java, with advanced understanding of algorithms, data structures, OOP and design patterns such as MVC/MVVM.
• Android development and practical experience with dependency management, RESTful APIs and web services.
• Git and issue tracking or management systems.
• Beneficial: e-commerce applications, Firebase, Go, Google Cloud Platform and AI / MCP.
