Site Manager - Northern Cape

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is looking for a Site Manager to run its Northern Cape site. The role manages, leads and grows the site by keeping inspection, sampling and sample-preparation operations safe, compliant and efficient, while supporting business development, client retention, revenue growth and the SGS management system.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, organise and control site operations including field sampling, inspection, sample preparation, dispatch, reporting support and site administration, and schedule personnel, vehicles, equipment and tools to meet client requirements.
• Manage daily performance, productivity, overtime, turnaround time, service quality and adherence to work instructions, and ensure adequate manpower, equipment, consumables, PPE and vehicles are available.
• Support site supervisors, the HSE and quality coordinators, and keep communication flowing between the site, the Regional Manager, the HOD of Trade, clients and support functions.
• Maintain technical and operational procedures, ensure compliance with SGS policies, the Code of Integrity, QHSE requirements, client instructions and South African legislation, and use the Check Status process and Stop Work Authority.
• Monitor quality control, data integrity, equipment condition, calibration, traceability, chain of custody and sample security, and record the basis for opinions and interpretations.
• Lead, coach and train staff, promote a professional, client-focused, ethical and accountable site culture, and manage petty cash, site assets, consumables, stock and overtime costs.
• Provide monthly workload, opportunity, cost and performance updates to management, and support investigations into complaints, claims and nonconformances.
• Build and maintain a client pipeline covering existing clients, mining operations, stockyards, sidings and logistics providers, conduct client visits, and support the Regional Manager with quotations, proposals and tenders.
• Track lost work, complaints and turnaround issues, and report monthly on business development activity, revenue risk and new leads.

Required profile

• Matric / Grade 12; a technical qualification in sampling, inspection, laboratory, mineral processing, logistics or a related field is preferred.
• SHE / HSE knowledge and practical risk-assessment training; ISO/IEC 17025 awareness or a VLC SANAS ISO 17025 course where applicable.
• Valid Code B driver's licence.
• Minimum 3 years of management or supervisory experience in inspection, sampling, sample preparation, mining, minerals, trade or logistics.
• Experience scheduling staff, vehicles, shifts and equipment, and in safety, quality, client communication and complaint resolution.
• Business development, quotation and proposal experience strongly preferred.
• Practical knowledge of bulk commodity sampling and sample preparation is essential.
