Senior Underwriter

About the role

Old Mutual is looking for a Senior Underwriter in Johannesburg to manage a group of underwriters and oversee their decision-making. The role involves selecting and accepting major risks on behalf of the company, assessing complex high-risk situations and approving or denying applications within company guidelines.

Key responsibilities

• Select and accept major risks and assist in planning and controlling the department
• Prepare quotations for credit insurance proposals, issue policy documents and review existing policies to assess credit risk
• Respond promptly to correspondence, emails and calls from branches, policyholders, brokers and others
• Supervise staff, plan workflows and drive continuous improvement
• Keep statutory and legislative knowledge current, handle customer complaints and comply with governance requirements
• Adhere to organisational policies, control costs and build productive relationships with stakeholders
• Share knowledge, develop new standards and procedures, and support the team's performance

Required profile

• Grade 12 and a tertiary qualification in Commerce (NQF Level 6-7 or equivalent), or a Commercial degree in progress
• Passed the Mark 4 Underwriting Technical Test and experience as a Mark 4-level underwriter
• Mandate required; prior experience preferred
• In-depth knowledge of industry commodities and work with policyholders
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
