Senior Tailings Engineer – Mining Waste Specialist

About the role

WSP is seeking a Senior Tailings Engineer to join its Mine Waste team in Midrand on a full‑time basis. You will act as a technical authority on tailings and geotechnical services, guiding complex projects from design through closure.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert technical advice on tailings design, stability, seepage and water storage dams for mining clients.
• Lead large‑budget projects, including contract negotiation, strategic planning and technical direction.
• Manage and review detailed geotechnical and tailings reports, ensuring compliance with legislation and licensing requirements.
• Design, inspect and oversee construction of mine waste storage facilities and tailings deposits.
• Mentor junior engineers, participate in hiring decisions and conduct performance reviews.
• Maintain client relationships, prepare proposals and contribute to business development.

Required profile

• BEng or BSc in Civil Engineering (10+ years post‑graduation experience in tailings/geotechnical engineering).
• Professional registration with ECSA.
• Specialist knowledge of mining waste legislation, water‑use and waste‑management licensing.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams and manage complex budgets.
