Senior Structural Engineer – Transmission Lines

About the role

WSP Africa’s Power & Energy team is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead the design and analysis of overhead transmission line structures. You will work on projects ranging from 33 kV to 400 kV across South Africa, the United Kingdom and other international markets, ensuring compliance with local and global standards.

Key responsibilities

• Design and analyse steel lattice towers and monopoles for transmission lines.
• Prepare calculations, drawings and technical reports for client and regulatory submissions.
• Conduct structural assessments and develop reinforcement or replacement solutions for existing infrastructure.
• Collaborate with civil, electrical and geotechnical specialists to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Provide technical input and cost estimates during tendering and procurement.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, utilities and authorities to support project delivery.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Proven experience in structural design of transmission line structures.
• Professional registration with ECSA or active progression towards registration.
• Strong understanding of wind loading, conductor tensioning and foundation interaction.
• Familiarity with South African standards (Eskom, SANS, TRMSCAAC1) and international standards (IEC 60826, BS EN 50341, Eurocodes). Optional experience with UK grid standards is advantageous.
