Senior Import Controller

About the role

The Senior Import Controller will lead the end‑to‑end import process for sea and air freight, ensuring timely delivery and full compliance with customs regulations. Based in Ballito, the role works closely with overseas agents, carriers, and internal stakeholders to optimise import operations.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the full import cycle for FCL, LCL and air freight, from booking to final delivery, coordinating with shipping lines, airlines and consolidators.
• Ensure accurate documentation (bills of lading, air waybills, commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin) and arrange customs clearance.
• Maintain compliance with customs regulations, tariff codes and trade agreements, liaising with brokers and authorities.
• Serve as primary contact for key import clients, handling escalations and building strong carrier and broker relationships.
• Oversee cost control, freight quotations, invoicing, and monitor demurrage, detention and storage charges.
• Mentor junior import coordinators, identify process improvements and support training on freight management software.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in import coordination/control across sea and air freight.
• Proven track record managing end‑to‑end import shipments and liaising with customs brokers and carriers.
• Experience in a senior or mentoring capacity is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of customs procedures, Incoterms, HS/tariff classification and duty/VAT calculations.
• Excellent organisational, problem‑solving and communication skills, with the ability to work independently under pressure.
