Rock Engineer – Underground Deep Level Gold Mining

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Rock Engineer to support underground deep‑level gold mining operations in the North West region of South Africa. The role involves applying geotechnical expertise to ensure rock stability and safety in ultra‑deep mine environments.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct geotechnical monitoring and rock mechanics investigations.
• Design and implement rock support systems and ground support solutions.
• Manage safety‑critical projects and oversee seismicity monitoring and analysis.
• Perform numerical modelling using specialised software.
• Ensure compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals Act and related regulations.

Required profile

• 5–8 years of underground gold mining experience, with at least 3 years as a Rock Engineer in deep‑level operations.
• BSc degree in Mine Engineering, Geology or Geotechnical Engineering.
• Chamber of Mines Certificate in Rock Engineering (COMREC). Additional certificates such as Mine Managers’ Certificate of Competency, ECSA registration, Blasting Certificate and First Aid are advantageous.
• Training in SAMTRAC safety, risk assessment and incident investigation.
• Knowledge of MHSA, Minerals Act and Mining Regulations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office, Datamine, Rocscience, MAP3D, Examine, CAD, MineRP and ArcGIS.
• Strong understanding of rock mechanics principles, geotechnical engineering practices, mining methods, ground support systems and rock burst prevention strategies.
• Familiarity with mine design and planning, geology, structural geology and ventilation interactions affecting rock stability.
