Product Lead - Speech API

About the role

Saigen, a provider of automatic speech recognition for African languages, is launching a self-serve Speech API and needs one person to run it as a business. The Product Lead owns the product end to end: what gets built, how developers find it, how customers buy it and how support works. The role reports to the CEO and works daily with the speech and engineering teams.

Key responsibilities

• Own the API roadmap and release decisions, turn specs into prioritised work for engineering and set pricing, plans, trial credits and usage limits
• Track activation, conversion, retention, revenue and reliability, and report monthly to the CEO
• Own the developer experience: signup flow, console, documentation, SDKs and code samples
• Define the target audience, run launches, produce tutorials, sample apps, benchmarks and a changelog, and build a presence among African developers
• Own the website pages, pricing page and signup funnel, and manage a modest marketing budget
• Help prospects buy, run demos, follow up signups, prepare quotes and proposals and negotiate within pricing guidelines
• Be the first line of support at launch, set up support tooling and a status page, handle onboarding for larger customers and build the case for a support or developer-relations hire

Required profile

• Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration or MBA
• At least 3 years as a professional software developer, including building or integrating REST or WebSocket APIs
• At least 8 years of professional work experience
• Evidence of taking something from idea to users, such as a product, side project, open-source library or internal tool
• Clear writing and comfort with numbers, such as pricing models and funnels
• Willingness to do hands-on work across all four areas, including answering support tickets in the first year

Required skills

• Building or integrating REST and WebSocket APIs
• Good to have: product management, developer relations, technical marketing, sales or customer support experience; familiarity with speech recognition, machine learning or audio; links into the African developer and startup community
