Product Development Engineer – Distribution & Transmission Hardware

About the role

The company, an African‑based manufacturer of energy transmission products, is seeking a Product Development Engineer to lead the development of composite insulator hardware and related manufacturing processes. Reporting to the PDE Manager, the role focuses on cost‑effective product design, prototype testing, and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Manage cost and schedule for all product development projects.
• Design, prototype, qualify and test new hardware components.
• Develop and implement manufacturing processes for distribution and transmission hardware, including substation clamps, wireform, vibration damping products and small hardware components.
• Drive continuous improvement of product designs and manufacturing methods.
• Prepare technical specifications and engage with suppliers for material and component qualification.
• Issue manufacturing drawings and ensure design revisions are correctly communicated.
• Support quality initiatives by reducing production waste and advising receipt inspection on incoming materials.

Required skills

• Computer‑Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) – intermediate level.
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) – intermediate to advanced.
• Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) – medium to advanced.
• SHEQX – intermediate to advanced (advantageous).
• Experience with non‑conformance management software.
• Basic understanding of ERP systems (e.g., SYSPRO).
