PCS Technician (PLC Programming)

About the role

Afrimat Industries in Lichtenburg is looking for an experienced PCS Technician with 5 years of experience in PLC programming within the instrumentation field. The role provides the software skills and support needed to control the process plant cost-effectively and to make plant process information accessible to management, engineering, the laboratory and planning.

Key responsibilities

• Complete tasks according to priority and plant availability.
• Initiate and complete work orders, ensuring timely sign-off and reporting.
• Keep the PLC room clean and at the right power (UPS) and temperature (air-conditioning).
• Support the software plant supervision system and write PLC programmes to automate the plant.
• Optimise existing controls and software, upgrade systems for better efficiency, and maintain a functional diagram register for S5 programs.
• Keep functional specification documentation, software backups and change control records up to date, and ensure software and code stay within safety limits.
• Make sure pre-start checklists for the plant section are available and updated.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Automation, Information Technology, Industrial Electronics, Electrical Engineering (Low Current) or similar.
• 5 years of experience in PLC programming and instrumentation.
• Ability to read and interpret P&ID diagrams and quality control plans (QCPs).
• Code B driver's licence.

Required skills

• PLC programming and instrumentation.
• ABB 800x DCS, Siemens S5 and Siemens S7.
• Control networks: UTP, fibre optic, Profibus, Modbus and switches.
• Computer and server hardware/software knowledge and fault finding.
