Operations Supervisor (AGL Terminals)

About the role

AGL South Africa, part of Africa Global Logistics, is looking for an Operations Supervisor for its Cape Town terminal. The role oversees and coordinates daily terminal operations, including cargo handling, vessel operations and yard management, ensuring they run safely and in line with safety standards, compliance regulations and company policy. It is a full-time, permanent position.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate terminal operations, including cargo handling, vessel operations, container yard management and gate activities, keeping cargo moving and resolving stakeholder queries.
• Lead a team of operational staff such as cargo handlers, tally clerks, yard clerks, cargo controllers and forklift operators, covering them with training, daily tasks, goals and feedback.
• Enforce safety protocols, carry out regular safety inspections, report incidents and help investigate them.
• Monitor equipment such as cranes, forklifts and reach stackers, coordinate with maintenance teams and allocate manpower and resources efficiently.
• Identify process improvements, review procedures and work with planning, logistics and customer service departments.
• Track KPIs such as vessel turnaround times, cargo throughput and safety compliance, and produce hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.
• Liaise with shipping lines and customers on vessel schedules, cargo deliveries and gate operations.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management or a related field preferred.
• 2-5 years of experience in terminal operations, shipping, logistics or a related field, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory role.
• Experience in a terminal, port or container yard environment is highly desirable.
• Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team, with strong communication, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
