Occupational Health & Safety Officer

About the role

The University of Pretoria is seeking an Occupational Health & Safety Officer to ensure a safe and healthy environment for staff, students, and visitors. This full‑time position supports compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related legislation across the campus.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and promote a healthy and safe work environment throughout the university.
• Assist the institution in complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations.
• Conduct occupational health and safety investigations and incident investigations.
• Develop and implement risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety plans.
• Provide training and guidance on safety procedures to staff and students.

Required profile

• Either a National 3‑year Diploma (NQF Level 6) in a relevant field (e.g., Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, Environmental Management, Risk Management, Occupational Hygiene, Disaster Management) with at least 2 years of experience, or a Grade 12 qualification with at least 4 years of experience in a similar role.
• Proven ability to work calmly under high‑stress situations and to develop effective work plans.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships.
