Job description

About the role

A charitable children's home network in Johannesburg is seeking a General Manager to steer its overall operational, administrative and strategic execution. The role ensures a safe, supportive and nurturing environment for children in need, balancing direct facility oversight with support for professional social work and community engagement. It works standard hours from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with flexibility for school engagements, daily errands and weekend emergency response.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the children's home, including child welfare, staffing and directing maintenance or IT requests to the relevant leads.
  • Develop, implement and maintain child safety and emotional development policies, and educate staff and children on them.
  • Track and document petty cash, receipts, pocket money and supplies, and monitor donation use (food, clothing, items).
  • Coordinate relief workers' payroll, track leave, evaluate staff performance and oversee recruitment and training of home personnel.
  • Submit registration and funding documentation to the Department of Social Development (DSD) and the NPO Act on time, and stay available for compliance visits.
  • Partner with the Social Worker on child assessments, therapeutic and recreational programmes and academic monitoring; mentor young adults in tertiary study or work and enforce independent living policies.
  • Direct volunteer, donor and public enquiries to the Communications, Marketing and Community Manager, and represent the organisation publicly.
  • Provide direct transport for medical visits, buy supplies such as uniforms and groceries, attend school progress meetings and negotiate fee discounts or sponsorships.

Required profile

  • Experience in volunteering, social work, psychology, non-profit management or a related field.
  • Proven track record in a non-profit, preferably in child welfare.
  • Understanding of the regulations governing children's homes in South Africa.
  • Strong organisational, administrative, prioritisation and interpersonal management skills.
  • Knowledge of South African cultural dynamics and socio-economic context.
  • Valid driver's licence, own reliable vehicle and willingness to work weekends for emergencies.

Required skills

  • Excellent PC literacy and MS Office, including Microsoft Excel.

What we offer

  • Guided by Christian values to support children in need.
  • Annual leave starting at 15 days per year, increasing by one day each year up to a cap of 20 days (15 accrued at any time).
  • On-site work with local travel for errands, school visits and medical transport.
  • 12-month fixed-term contract with prospect of permanency thereafter.
