Mechanical Engineer – Boilers

About the role

The Mechanical Engineer (Boilers) will support the Felixton Mill by ensuring optimal performance of boiler plant equipment within budgetary constraints. The role combines technical expertise, problem solving and project leadership to drive maintenance excellence and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in procurement, negotiate with suppliers and oversee quality control during manufacture, installation, acceptance testing and commissioning of boiler equipment.
• Provide engineering expertise to operations, ensuring smooth and efficient performance of plant machinery and systems.
• Conduct failure root‑cause analysis, develop corrective actions and preventative measures.
• Develop and review technical specifications for mechanical equipment.
• Perform design analysis on failures and on existing equipment to assess remaining life and recommend modifications.
• Lead technical competence building, mentor junior engineers and deliver seminars or workshops.
• Apply good engineering standards, conduct technical audits and manage improvement projects.
• Manage plant SHEQ issues, identify and mitigate risks, and maintain productive relationships with factory personnel and external specialists.

Required profile

• BSc/BEng/BTech in Mechanical Engineering from an institution accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa.
• Proven experience in mechanical engineering within a sugar or similar process‑industry environment.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with experience in root‑cause and design analysis.
• Ability to lead projects autonomously and work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams.
