Master Electrician - Railway Substations

About the role

Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) is recruiting a Master Electrician (grade H3) in Worcester to keep electrical substations, traction power supplies, overhead track equipment and transmission lines available and efficient for train operations. The post reports to a Technical Supervisor and covers inspection, testing, fault finding, repairs and maintenance of substation and traction power equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate and fix electrical faults in substations and signal supply points according to the approved maintenance programme
• Maintain high-voltage circuit breakers, transformers, rectifiers, busbars, relays, batteries and chargers, and 25kV and 11kV equipment
• Seal leaking transformers, adjust tap changers, troubleshoot telecontrol equipment and string flying busbars
• Install 11kV and 25kV auxiliary transformers and join and terminate high- and medium-voltage cables
• Carry out pre-trip inspections of equipment, vehicles and protective gear, and attend emergency callouts
• Keep the work area clean, store materials safely and submit work reports to the Technical Supervisor

Required profile

• Grade 12/N3 and a trade test red seal
• At least 5 years of experience as an artisan
• Working at heights certificate, OBML modules completed, and a code B driver's licence
• Completed 6.6kV and 11kV AC courses and training on 3kV DC, 25kV AC and 50kV AC traction systems
• Red/brown certificates for 6.6kV, 11kV, 25kV, 50kV AC and 3kV DC
• Physically fit, medically fit and with good visual acuity

• Knowledge of electrical norms and standards (SANS 3000-4, SABS 0142 of 1993)
