Landfill Manager

About the role

The waste management company is looking for a Landfill Manager to oversee the day‑to‑day operations of a Class A landfill site. You will ensure compliance with environmental legislation, waste‑management licences and health, safety and environmental standards while managing resources, budgets and the site operations team.

Key responsibilities

• Forecast and monitor operational expenditure and budgets for manpower, materials and equipment.
• Build, lead and develop the operations team, optimising performance.
• Manage daily landfill operations in line with the Waste Management Licence and the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM).
• Oversee waste reception, classification and disposal to maximise diversion from landfill.
• Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual compliance and performance reports to authorities.
• Implement and maintain a Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) management system.
• Monitor landfill operations to ensure adherence to waste acceptance criteria.
• Manage leachate collection and leak detection systems.
• Oversee landfill gas management activities.
• Support geotechnical investigations related to liner and foundation design.
• Ensure effective environmental monitoring and compliance reporting.
• Drive operational excellence and continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Knowledge of double composite liner systems (HDPE + clay, permeability ≤1×10⁻⁹ m/s).
• Understanding of GNR 635 waste assessment thresholds.
• Ability to enforce waste acceptance criteria per GNR 636.
• Experience with leachate collection and leak detection systems.
• Knowledge of landfill gas management (GNR 924).
• Familiarity with geotechnical investigations for liner and foundation design.
• Competence in monitoring and compliance reporting.
