Research Assistant – Land Long‑Term Observation

About the role

The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) seeks a Research Assistant to support the LTO Land programme within the South African Antarctic Programme. The role involves providing operational and administrative assistance to ensure smooth project delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate meetings, maintain project records, compile reports and monitor deadlines.
• Facilitate procurement processes, including quotations, requisitions, purchase orders and contract administration.
• Support fieldwork logistics, travel arrangements, workshop planning and other operational activities for marine and polar research.
• Liaise with researchers, partner institutions, service providers and government stakeholders.
• Assist the Project Lead with budget monitoring, financial record‑keeping and audit documentation.

Required skills

• Knowledge of PFMA, Treasury Regulations and Supply Chain Management processes.
• Experience in research administration, project support, procurement or logistics.
• Understanding of marine and polar research environments.
