Experimental Farm Manager – Pretoria

About the role

The University of Pretoria seeks an Experimental Farm Manager to lead its farm as a sustainable agricultural innovation platform. The role combines strategic, scientific, operational and financial leadership to support teaching, research, commercialisation and industry engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and oversee integrated crop and livestock systems.
• Manage livestock production, including dairy, sheep, beef and other ruminants, and ensure animal welfare and bio‑security.
• Plan and execute seasonal crop and fodder production, precision irrigation and soil management.
• Coordinate agricultural research trials, student training and industry‑linked projects.
• Oversee farm infrastructure, maintenance of irrigation, machinery and buildings.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, animal welfare and bio‑security legislation.
• Prepare annual budgets, monitor expenditures and manage procurement.
• Lead and develop farm staff, handle recruitment and training records.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Animal Science, Agronomy or related field.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in agricultural management, livestock and crop production, budgeting and procurement.
• Valid driver’s licence.
