Executive Director: Research

About the role

The University of Cape Town is seeking an Executive Director of Research to provide strategic leadership for its Research Office. Reporting to the Deputy Vice‑Chancellor for Research & Internationalisation, the role will shape and implement the university’s research strategy, strengthen postgraduate research, and expand international collaborations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic decision‑making on research policy in partnership with senior university leadership.
• Develop and manage stakeholder relationships with universities, research councils, donors, and government agencies.
• Oversee the Research Office Department, including the Postgraduate and Research Development Directorate, Office of Research Integrity, Postgraduate Centre, and Funding Office.
• Ensure effective operation of research support functions and representation of UCT’s research agenda across governance structures.
• Promote multi‑disciplinary and international research collaborations.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (PhD advantageous).
• At least 10 years of experience in research management and administration.
• Minimum 5 years in a senior strategic leadership role overseeing diverse teams.
• Deep knowledge of higher‑education research environments, statutory research councils, and funding landscapes.
• Proven ability to build national and international research partnerships.
• Strong people‑management and communication capabilities.
