Deputy Director-General – Office of the CFO

About the role

The Deputy Director-General will lead the Office of the Chief Financial Officer within the Mpumalanga Department of Education. This senior position is responsible for providing strategic financial direction, ensuring compliance with public finance legislation, and supporting the department’s strategic plan.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain mechanisms for timely financial information and technical advice to the Accounting Officer.
• Ensure effective and economical use of departmental financial resources and assets to achieve strategic objectives.
• Provide technical advice to line managers on equitable allocation, maintenance and utilisation of resources.
• Monitor compliance with the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations and the Division of Revenue Act.

Required profile

• SAQA‑recognised Honours degree or Post‑Graduate Diploma (NQF level 8) in a relevant field.
• Minimum eight years of senior managerial experience, preferably in the public sector.
• Registration as a Chartered Accountant (CA (SA)) is an advantage.
• Valid driver’s licence and completion of the Public Service Senior Management Leadership Programme with a pre‑entry certificate.

Required skills

• GRAP (Generally Recognised Accounting Practices) and accrual‑basis accounting.
• Performance budgeting and strategic planning.
• Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, Division of Revenue Act and Public Service Act.
• Project management and financial analysis.
• Report writing and verbal communication.
