Construction Health and Safety Officer

About the role

The building refurbishment company seeks a dedicated Construction Health and Safety Officer to ensure compliance with safety legislation and promote a safe working environment on site in Cape Town.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legal and regulatory safety requirements and ensure site compliance.
• Compile, consolidate and manage safety files and related documentation.
• Investigate incidents and accidents, determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Conduct safety inspections, develop risk assessments for new activities and machinery.
• Report health and safety activities to senior management and compile statistical data.
• Manage subcontractor compliance and oversee asbestos inventory and management.
• Lead health and safety meetings, identify hazards and recommend risk‑reduction measures.
• Address employee health‑related complaints and ensure proper disposal of hazardous waste.
• Promote safety initiatives and regularly inspect equipment for safe use.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) qualification.
• Minimum five years of experience in the construction industry.
• Registration with the South African Council for the Project & Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) as a CHSO or CHSM.
• Understanding of applicable health and safety legislation.
• Clean criminal record and a valid driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word.
