Chief Assistant Technical Officer (Scientific Support)

About the role

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in North West, South Africa is looking for a Chief Assistant Technical Officer (Scientific Support). The role supports the collection, processing and archiving of hydrological data and assists technicians, assistant technical officers and scientists in their work.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in collecting, processing and archiving hydrological data such as stream flow, surface water levels, evaporation and rainfall data.
• Ensure that data and field forms for surface water hydrological data are received, registered and processed.
• Use the HYDSTRA data and information system for data processing, archiving and data quality control.
• Archive processed hydrological data according to departmental standards.
• Report recommendations from field visits to the supervisor.
• Convert binary (raw logger) data into a suitable format for import into relevant systems.
• Assist with sharing hydrological data and information with stakeholders within DWS.
• Support Technicians, Assistant Technical Officers and Scientists, including quality control.
• Provide input for training materials on data processing and give on-the-job training in the field of expertise.
