Chairperson of the Risk Management Committee

About the role

The Water Research Commission (WRC) seeks an independent Chairperson to lead its Risk Management Committee for a three‑year term. This senior governance position provides strategic oversight of risk, compliance, ethics, business continuity and internal control processes in line with public sector legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and chair the Risk Management Committee, ensuring effective meetings and decision‑making.
• Provide independent oversight of WRC’s risk management strategy, risk appetite, tolerance and key exposures.
• Monitor the effectiveness of risk mitigation measures and internal controls across the organisation.
• Review and advise on strategic, operational, financial, compliance and emerging risk reports.
• Ensure compliance with governance standards, legislation and best practice.
• Prepare recommendations and reports for the Audit Committee and Board.
• Engage with senior management, internal and external auditors, and other oversight bodies on risk‑related matters.

Required profile

• Relevant Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in Accounting, Auditing, Corporate Governance, Financial Management, Risk Management or Compliance.
• Extensive experience in risk management, governance, compliance or related senior advisory roles within the public sector.
• Demonstrated ability to lead committees and advise executive leadership.
• Strong understanding of the Public Finance Management Act, National Treasury Regulations and related risk frameworks.
