Back End Engineer – Cloud & Real-World Hardware Systems

About the role

We are a small, focused engineering team building reliable backend systems that interface with real-world hardware. The role is based onsite in Cape Town and is ideal for a mid-level engineer with 3-5 years of experience who loves testing, iteration and systems engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain backend services that power our geospatial and live-video streaming platform.
• Build and evolve the core API platform, ensuring high performance and scalability.
• Write and maintain automated unit and integration tests and improve overall test coverage.
• Investigate, debug and resolve production incidents quickly and methodically.
• Contribute to infrastructure-as-code using AWS CDK and enhance observability, logging and system validation.
• Document system architecture, decisions and operational procedures.

Required profile

• 3-5 years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong problem-solving mindset and a passion for writing clean, well-tested code.
• Comfortable working in a small, fast-moving team and communicating clearly.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.

Required skills

• Proficiency in TypeScript or Python (or both).
• Experience with Go, C++ or Node.js is a plus.
• Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL and Linux command-line tools.
• Hands-on experience with AWS services and AWS CDK.
• Familiarity with Redis/Valkey, MQTT, SQS and streaming protocols such as WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP.
